Gothic Remake — One Week After Release: Sales and Reviews
Gothic Remake — One Week After Release
Gothic Remake, one of the most anticipated releases for Polish gamers, debuted on June 5, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The Spanish studio Alkimia Interactive is responsible for this remastered version of the cult classic RPG from 2001, and THQ Nordic is the publisher.
The game was built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 and features a full Polish voiceover. More than a week after its debut, a clear picture is emerging: commercial success and a warm reception from players go hand in hand with mixed reviews from critics, who mainly point out technical issues.
The sales figures were impressive. According to THQ Nordic, Gothic Remake sold a total of 500,000 copies across all platforms during its first week. The developers emphasized that the series’ long-standing community played a major role.
Activity on PC looks good, too. According to data cited by the developer, the game reached a peak of nearly 78,000 concurrent players on Steam on June 7, and at the time of the announcement, it had over 15,000 user reviews, 85% of which were positive, with an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating (the number of reviews has increased significantly since then). The developers also responded quickly to reported bugs by releasing subsequent updates—the second major patch was released on June 19, adding m.in. Missing image modes on consoles.
Critics’ reviews and their main criticisms
In contrast to the players’ enthusiasm, reviewers are divided. The OpenCritic aggregator rates the game as “Fair” with an average score of 73 out of 100 and recommendations from about 59% of critics, while Metacritic summarizes the reviews as “mixed or average.” However, reviewers unanimously praise what matters most to fans—the faithfully recreated atmosphere of the original Colony and the sense of free exploration without holding the player’s hand.
The technical condition receives the most criticism. Eurogamer.pl It explicitly mentions the terrible state of the launch version, and the shortcomings—errors in quests, poor character AI, and drops in frame rate—are repeatedly mentioned in many reviews. Some reviewers lowered their scores, particularly for the PlayStation 5 version, where performance issues and the 30-frame-per-second cap are common problems.
- Pros: A faithful recreation of the atmosphere of the original Gothic and the dark world of Cologne.
- Pros: Free exploration without a minimap and satisfying character progression.
- Pros: More extensive quests and expanded storylines compared to the original.
- On the downside: Numerous technical errors, including broken tasks and disappearing NPCs.
- On the downside: Lower performance on consoles, especially on the PlayStation 5.
- On the downside: a high barrier to entry and some controversial design decisions.
