The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past – CD PROJEKT RED Announces a New Expansion

The Return to the Trail is now a reality. CD PROJEKT RED has officially confirmed that The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is the third story-driven expansion for the cult classic The Wild Hunt. The studio announced work on the expansion on May 27, 2026, with a release scheduled for 2027. The announcement came a bit earlier than planned—as the developers themselves admitted, information about the title was leaked prematurely via the game’s launcher, prompting the studio to confirm the project sooner than expected. The expansion is being developed exclusively for current-generation hardware and will debut on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. More than a decade after the release of the base game, players will once again take on the role of Geralt of Rivia.

“The medallion is trembling... that can only mean one thing!” — with these words, CD PROJEKT RED announced its return to The Witcher’s path.

What do we already know about Songs of the Past?

  • Title: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past.
  • Release date: 2027 – the exact date has not yet been announced.
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Creators: CD PROJEKT RED in collaboration with Fool's Theory.
  • Main character: Geralt of Rivia, once again.
  • More information: The studio is announcing them for the summer of 2026.
CD PROJEKT RED is responsible for producing the expansion in collaboration with Fool’s Theory, a studio comprised of veterans who were once involved in the development of Wild Hunt. The same team is also working on a remake of the first Witcher game. Songs of the Past is neither a remaster nor a minor update—it is a full-fledged story expansion that once again places the White Wolf at the center of the action. The studio has not yet revealed what the story will be about; more details are expected to be released in the summer of 2026. Expectations are sky-high, as the base game has sold over 60 million copies and won more than 250 Game of the Year awards. The bar was also set high by two previous expansions—*Heart of Stone* and *Blood and Wine* from 2016—which are still considered benchmark expansions in the RPG genre. There is also no shortage of speculation online that the events of the expansion may serve as a bridge to the plot of the next installment in the series, though the studio has not confirmed these assumptions.
The launch is scheduled for 2027. CD PROJEKT RED has not yet announced an exact date.
