A patch panel is one of the basic components used in structured cabling installations. It is mounted in the rails of a 19" rack using the same screws as those used to mount active devices. A patch panel is used to terminate cables that converge in a distribution cabinet.
To maintain the proper connection standard, the Cat. 6 UTP RJ-45 ports on the patch panel are connected to active devices using patch cords of the appropriate category and construction. The cable is connected to the patch panel using a specialized crimping tool, also known as a Krone knife.
