A smart upgrade for your headphonesThe SB1 model from the German company Sharkoon is an external sound card that helps you get more out of your headphones, especially if you’ve previously relied solely on the motherboard’s built-in sound card, which has a production cost of nearly zero, and many people still get dizzy at the thought of how many problems they’ve had—or even continue to have—with such “free” sound cards. The German engineering team focused on the SB1 to improve sound quality during playback as well as microphone recording, primarily through headphones. Using the large switches, you can easily and quickly adjust the volume, and the whole unit can be easily tucked away—even in your pants pocket—if needed, allowing you to carry the sound card along with your laptop and headphones to a friend’s place for a small LAN party or even to work. In addition to the standard headphone output and microphone input, the Sharkoon SB1 sound card also features a 3.5mm TRRS port (in the headphone output) to which you can connect single-cable headsets that normally only work with smartphones or tablets. For music lovers, there’s also a built-in hardware equalizer and a button to adjust it, so you can tailor the sound card’s settings to the music you’re listening to at any given moment, depending on your mood. In addition to all these features, no drivers or software installation is required, and everything works seamlessly on operating systems such as Windows, Linux, macOS, and PlayStation 4.Built-in Equalizer and Surround EffectsHowever, if you want to use virtual surround sound effects, you must install the appropriate software on Windows. This gives you effects such as cinema mode, gaming mode, music mode, or the option to disable these effects. The Sharkoon SB1 sound card is based on the powerful and, above all, stable SSS1629 chipset, which, in addition to standard sound card functionality, features a built-in hardware equalizer with eight different presets tailored to various music genres—and is also used by some gamers to better hear opponents’ footsteps in certain first-person shooters.
